Looking to access superannuation from the UK

If you’ve spent time working in Australia on a permanent visa it is likely that you’ve accumulated a significant superannuation fund. It is very important to note that the Australian tax system is a set of domestic rules that apply to resident taxpayers. The fact that a superannuation pension is exempt in Australia doesn’t mean it may not be taxed in a foreign jurisdiction. Therefore, if you are living in the UK you need to consider the residence-based tax rules that may apply to foreign pensions.

You can certainly gain access to your super once you have reached your preservation age. Once you are over the age of 65, you can get access to your super even if you are still working. However, whilst it may be possible to withdraw from your Australian superannuation account without incurring any taxation in Australia, you have to consider the tax rules which apply in the UK.

Our UK tax expert, Joanne Lamberth of Fairway Tax, can advise on these matters.
